Southern New Hampshire BACK PAIN ISSUES RELATED TO PREGNANCY: Osteoporosis & Degenerative Spondylolisthesis

Women with pregnancy-related Southern New Hampshire back pain are welcomed at New Hampshire Spine and Sport. 76% of pregnant women in a recent study reported pregnancy-related back pain. Women who experienced back pain prior to pregnancy experienced an increased risk of pain during pregnancy. (1) For post-menopausal women on the whole there is a bigger risk of osteoporosis because of the fast bone loss attributed to estrogen reduction. Issues like obesity, age at menarche, breastfeeding, and parity also contribute. In a recent report, the incidence of osteoporosis was 35.24%. Specifically, the risk for post-menopausal osteoporosis increased with the number of children a woman birthed (higher at more than 4 children) and with the older age (highest at over 35 years) of the mother at the last childbirth. (2) Each full-term pregnancy increases the risk of acquiring degenerative spondylolisthesis by 22%. A hysterectomy doubles a woman’s chances. Why? It’s proposed that it is because of low back pain and diminished abdominal muscles during and after pregnancy that establishes the spine for this condition. (3) One study points out the fact that weak abdominal muscles affect the stability of the spine and likely contribute to the condition called degenerative spondylolisthesis. This condition is more usual in women. (4) New Hampshire Spine and Sport gently treats and relieves pain of spondylolisthesis much to the pleasure of our Southern New Hampshire chiropractic patients!
