Southern New Hampshire CHIROPRACTIC TIP OF THE MONTH: Strengthen the Quadratus Lumborum
The quadratus lumborum – a quadrilateral-shaped muscle - is a paired muscle on both sides of the abdominal wall. It is a deep muscle and typically thought of as a back muscle as it extends from the 12th rib to the upper 4 lumbar vertebrae. When contracted, the quadratus lumborum causes lateral flexion of the lumbar spine and/or elevation of the pelvis. (5) Several bridge-type exercises are being examined about the way in which they strengthen the quadratus lumborum’s 2 layers of muscle in order for it to best contribute to the motor control of the lumbar pain and prevent back pain. (6) New Hampshire Spine and Sport and you can discuss how your spine may benefit from such exercise at your next Southern New Hampshire chiropractic visit to New Hampshire Spine and Sport.
