Acute Pain: Spinal Manipulation

Acute low back pain – pain that lasts up to 6 weeks in duration – responds to spinal manipulation according to a new article in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that reviewed published randomized clinical trials. This review shows that spinal manipulation provides modest improvement in pain and function with no serious adverse effects. (2)

JAMA also published an editorial by the well-known medical doctor and author, Richard Deyo, MD, about spinal manipulation for back pain referencing Paige’s study. The editorial emphasizes that spinal manipulation treatment for acute low back pain is appropriate. Its use is in line with the American College of Physicians review and subsequent guideline. Spinal manipulation produces modest improvement in pain and function in the short-term compared with sham manipulation, usual care and other treatments. And of note, Deyo emphasizes that, of the trials reviewed by Paige et al and the American College of Physicians, none suggested that spinal manipulation care was less effective than conventional medical care (drugs, rest, etc.). SMT proved equal to or exceeded conventional care. (3)
