Southern New Hampshire Nutrition Approaches for Degenerated Discs: Broccoli, Aloe and Grapeseed Oil

May 12, 2021

Who knew? Researchers are an interesting breed. How they think up things to try is a curiosity! What would make them to think “grapeseed oil, aloe vera gel, and broccoli may positively impact disc degeneration” is a wonder to New Hampshire Spine and Sport and surely to our Southern New Hampshire chiropractic patients, but a good wonder! They may be onto something to deal with discs that are degenerated which cause back pain, neck pain, and disturbance of life.

PREVENTING AND POSSIBLY REVERSING DISC DEGENERATION

Southern New Hampshire low back pain is very closely associated with degeneration of the intervertebral disc in the spine.  At its basic level, the Southern New Hampshire degenerated disc is defined by a reduced number of cells as well as alteration to its tissue and extracellular matrix content. In several of these studies, rabbit discs are examined as they are like human discs. In one rabbit study, researchers looked at the degenerated intervertebral disc and its response to the application of broccoli sprout extract. They thought and their study discovered that it had restorative and preventive influences on degenerated discs. (1) In second rabbit study, grapeseed extracts were applied to degenerated discs. Due to their having anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties as natural flavonoids, grapeseed extracts were evaluated to find out how their inhibitory and anabolic effects would be on degenerated discs. They proved to be restorative and preventive in terms of affecting the degraded disc tissues’ collagen fibrils. (2) In a third study, aloe vera gel was utilized. Aloe vera gel stopped and reversed disc degeneration. Researchers noted statistically significant (a big deal!) gradual reversal of degenerative changes. These modifications were seen in the collagen content organization, the nucleus pulposus and annulus fibrosus cell rise, and degree of disc degeneration. (3) New Hampshire Spine and Sport will follow these interesting studies and see how they will apply to human use. Maybe these results will inspire Southern New Hampshire chiropractic patients to enjoy more broccoli, utilize grapeseed, and find a way to enjoy some aloe vera gel?
